"From the dome of the Imperial Hofberg, looking across Monarchic Vienna toward the heart if the city, we see through a cross-section into the Burg of a century ago. The great Franz Liszt plays for a courtly audience, while his paramour, the curious Russian Princess Sayn-Wittgenstein, puffs as she was wont to do, on a cigar. Hurrying along the streets below, we see crowds of citizens... skilled artisans, technicians, craftsmen... and can well understand how came Vienna's wondrous palaces, state houses and abundant monuments... how came these fruits of the loving, patriarchal monarchy of the Hapsburgs. Cheap labor."
